191 Visa

The 191 visa is for people who have previously lived, worked, or studied in a designated regional area of Australia on an eligible visa.

Overview

In November 2022, new applications for the subclass 191 skilled regional visa will be accepted.

Holders with 191 Visa can:

  • Indefinitely live and work in Australia
  • Include immediate family on their 191 Visa
  • Only live, work, and study in regions
  • Sponsor eligible family members

Subclass 494 and 491 visa holders will be able to transition to permanent residency with the Permanent Skilled Regional Visa (subclass 191).

If you need a permanent visa right away, you may be able to apply for one of the following permanent visas instead:

  • 186 Visa (ENS)
  • 187 Visa (RSMS) DE CLOSED
  • 189 Visa

Important information on the Subclass 191 Visa

  • applications open in 2022
  • applicable for only 5 years
  • visa holders can live, work, and study but only in regional areas
  • If sponsored by an employer, only in the nominated position
  • The applicant must be living in Australia to apply for a 191 Visa

Eligibility

As November 2022 approaches, more information will be provided about the specific requirements of this new 191 visa.

In November 2022, new applications for the subclass 191 skilled regional visa will be accepted. You must have the following qualifications to apply:

  • Been in possession of a 491 or 494 visa for at least three years
  • Met the requirements for regional provisional visas.
  • You must be a resident of Australia to apply.
  • Applicants must have taxable income equal to or greater than the minimum amount specified in the legislative instrument (currently $53,900).

Important: Applicants earning $53,900 and who claim tax deductions will no longer be eligible to apply because their taxable income will fall below the threshold

Cost estimate

The application fees will be announced closer to the start by the department.

Fees for visa application will be around:

  • $385 for the main applicant
  • $195 for the additional applicant over the age of 18
  • $100 for the Additional Applicant Under the Age of 18

Applicants will also have the option to pay an additional fee if they are 18 or older and have less than functional English.

In November 2022, applications for the Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Visa will be accepted.
