General Skilled Migration

There are many individuals who wish to apply for a skilled migration visa. Skilled visas are points tested and the applicant must meet minimum points in order to apply for these visas. The first step in the skilled visas category application is to lodge and get a positive skill assessment from the relevant assessing body of your nominated occupation. Once you get a positive skill assessment, the second step is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Skill Select (DoHA’s online system). Subject to meeting all other requirements you may be invited by DoHA to apply for a visa and you will have a limited time to apply after that invitation. There are various visa options in the Skilled Visas category.

Skilled – Independent visa Subclass 189

This visa is an independent permanent skilled visa which allows you to enter, live and work in Australia. Under this visa, applicants do not require sponsorship from an employer, family or state or territory government nomination. Applicant must meet the necessary threshold in a nominated occupation which must be on the applicable THE MEDIUM AND LONG-TERM STRATEGIC SKILLS LIST (MLTSSL) and skills assessed by relevant assessing authority.

Skilled – Nominated visa Subclass 190

This is a permanent visa for applicants who have applied for and successfully obtained an Australian state/territory government nomination. Applicant must meet the necessary threshold in a nominated occupation must be on the applicable THE SHORT-TERM SKILLED OCCUPATION LIST (STSOL) and skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority. The applicant must meet specific requirements in order to get an invitation from the Australian state/territory government.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa Subclass 491

This is a Provisional visa allows the visa holder to stay in Australia for up to five years. You can live, work and study in a designated regional area of Australia. With this visa you can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want, while the visa is valid.

For the successful Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa, you must satisfy the below points:

  • be nominated to apply by a state or territory government agency, or an eligible relative must sponsor you
  • have an occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list
  • have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • be invited to apply
  • satisfy the points test

A person can also apply for permanent residence, if eligible, through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) – which commences on 16 November 2022″

Skilled Regional (Residence) (Subclass 887) visa

A permanent visa for Subclass 489 visa holders who have lived for at least two (2) years and worked for at least one (1) year in a Specified Regional Area in Australia.

Skilled Graduate (Subclass 485) visa

In this Skilled Graduate (Subclass 485), there are two separate Streams.

1) Graduate Work Stream

This is a temporary visa that allows international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations in Australia’s needs. It lets you live, study, and work in Australia temporarily.

With the Graduate Work Stream Skilled Graduate (Subclass 485) visa you can stay up to 18 months in Australia. It also allows you to bring your family with you.

2) Post Study Work Stream

This is a temporary visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It allows you live, work, and study in Australia. This visa also allows you to bring your family with you.

With the Post Study Work Stream Skilled Graduate (Subclass 485) visa you can stay up to 2 and 4 years in Australia depending on the qualification.

This visa has no restrictions on work, study, and travel.

Skilled Recognised Graduate (Subclass 476)

The Skilled Recognised Graduate (Subclass 476) visa allows recent engineering graduates to live, work or study in Australia for up to 18 months. You must have completed a degree or higher qualification from a specified institution within the past 2 years, and be under 31 years of age. 

For a successful grant of this visa, you must not have previously been the primary visa holder of a subclass 476 or 485 visa.

With this visa, you can travel, work, study in Australia. It also allows you to bring your family with you.
