    Australia Student Visa

Subclass 500 visa is a temporary visa that allows students to study for up to 6 years. The length of stay will be determined by the type of course and its length. Primary school students in grades 1–4 are typically granted a student visa for a maximum of three years.

There are various types of Streams available under the Student Visa for Australia. Every Stream is determined by the type of study you intend to pursue.

The following study types are permitted under the student (subclass 500) visa:

    • Higher education (such as university or tertiary-level study)
    • Primary and secondary schooling in Australia
    • Secondary school exchange programs for international students
    • Postgraduate research programs (including masters by research and PhD)
    • Non-award programs, such as Study Abroad and Exchange semesters
    • Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs
    • Pathway courses for further academic study
    • English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
    • International students sponsored by the Australian Government’s Department of Defence or Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

Multiple courses, such as a language course and a vocational course, can be combined on the same visa.

This visa allows you to legally work part-time (up to 48 hours per fortnight) during the course period and full-time during the course breaks, subject to your visa conditions. Students studying for a master’s by research or a doctoral degree may have different work rights.

If your student visa expires before you graduate, you may be able to obtain a Visitor visa (subclass 600). You will need a letter from your education provider stating your expected graduation date.

If you have or have previously held a student visa and have completed specific qualifications in Australia within the past six months, you could qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).

If you wish to stay longer for other reasons, you must apply for a new visa that suits your circumstances. Explore your visa options

Eligibility Criteria for the Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500)

    • Hold a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from an Australian educational provider.
    • Be enrolled in a full-time CRICOS-registered course.
    • Meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
    • Show sufficient financial capacity to cover tuition, living expenses, travel costs, and, if applicable, expenses for accompanying family members.
    • Meet the English language proficiency requirements (unless exempt).
    • Maintain Overseas Student Health Coverage (OSHC) for the duration of your stay (unless exempt).
    • Meet Australia’s health requirements.
    • Meet the character requirements, including providing police certificates as requested.
    • Have approved welfare arrangements if you are under 18 years of age.
    • Sign the Australian Values Statement (if you are 18 years or older).
    • Have no outstanding debts to the Australian government, or have made plans to repay them.
    • If applying from within Australia, ensure that you have an eligible visa and that you meet all visa requirements.

Application Cost of Australia Student Visa

The main applicant’s Student (subclass 500) visa application charge starts from AUD$2,500. Lower visa application charges are available for eligible applicants in limited circumstances.

Each family member who applies for a visa must also pay a fee.

Note: Citizens of Timor-Leste and the Pacific Islands who are eligible to apply for a student or student guardian visa are exempt.

You may also need to pay additional costs for health examinations, police certificates, and biometrics.

Use the Australian Government’s Visa Pricing Estimator to calculate your visa application charge. Please note that the estimator does not include additional costs such as medical examinations or police clearances.

If You Include Your Family Members

You can include eligible family members (such as your partner or dependent children) when you apply for your Subclass 500 visa. However, your child must be under 18 years old at the time your visa is granted. Otherwise, they must obtain their own visa.

Even if your family members do not plan to accompany you to Australia initially, you must still declare them in your student visa application. Failing to do so will prevent them from being able to join you in Australia on a Subclass 500 Student Visa.

Your family members can also apply in ImmiAccount as a subsequent entrant (at a later time, separate from your application). Make sure to check the annual school costs for any dependent children attending either public or private schools in Australia.

If you have a baby after your visa is granted, you must notify the Department of Home Affairs and take the appropriate steps to add your newborn to your visa or arrange an appropriate visa, depending on where the child is born.

    Packaged Courses

If you are applying for a packaged course, you must provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for each course included in your package.

Your main course of study is the final course in the package. This course determines the financial capacity and English language requirements you must meet for your Student (subclass 500) visa application.

The gap between courses in a packaged course must generally be no more than two calendar months. An exception applies if the first course finishes at the end of the standard academic year and the next course starts at the beginning of the following standard academic year.

For example, if one course ends in November and the next begins in February, a gap of three to four months is generally acceptable because it falls between standard academic years.
