General Skilled Migration (GSM Visa)
The Skilled Migration Program’s goal is to attract highly employable people to migrate to Australia. It is the most common way for people to come to Australia. Many people would like to apply for a skilled migration visa. Skilled visas are point-based, and applicants must meet certain criteria in order to apply. The first step in applying for a skilled visa is to lodge your application and obtain a positive skill assessment from the relevant assessing body for your nominated occupation.
After receiving a positive skill assessment, the next step is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via Skill Select (DoHA’s online system). If you meet all other requirements, Doha may invite you to apply for a visa, and you will have a limited time to apply following that invitation. The Skilled Visas category includes a number of visa options.
Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189
The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) allows highly skilled workers to migrate permanently to Australia under the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. Unlike other migration options offered by the Australian Government, this visa does not require sponsorship from an employer, a state or territory government, or a family member. The goal of this visa is to attract skilled and eligible individuals from around the world to join various high-demand sectors across Australia.
A point-based assessment is used to check the eligibility of applications for the 189 visa. Applicants need to achieve at least 65 points in this points-tested system. These points are awarded based on several factors, including age, educational background, skilled work experience, English language ability, and other applicable qualifications.
Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190
The Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) is a permanent visa that allows skilled workers to live and work in Australia. It uses a points-based system and is granted to applicants who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government.
Unlike the Subclass 189 visa, which does not require state nomination, the 190 visa requires that your skills align with the job needs of a particular state or territory. This makes it a perfect option for skilled professionals whose occupations are in demand in certain regions of Australia.
Additionally, the Skilled Nominated Visa can lead to permanent residency more quickly than some other options. It is part of the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, which aims to draw skilled talent to Australia that can contribute to the growth of both regional and city-based economies.
Subclass 191 Skilled Regional Visa
The Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 191) is part of Australia’s regional migration program that provides permanent residency to individuals who have lived and worked in designated regional areas on a qualifying visa. This visa supports the government’s aim of developing regional communities by encouraging skilled workers to settle outside of major cities.
If you’ve held an eligible temporary visa and met the required living and work conditions in a regional area, you may qualify for the Subclass 190 visa. It is granted as recognition for a long-term commitment to Australia’s regional areas.
The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491) is a temporary visa that is valid for up to five years. This points-based visa allows skilled workers and their families to live, work, and study in Australia’s designated regional areas temporarily. It may also lead to permanent residency if the applicant meets the necessary residency and income requirements.
You can only apply for Subclass 491 if you are nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible relative residing in a designated regional area in Australia. Furthermore, to be qualified, you must:
- Be under 45 years of age.
- Meet the skills assessment criteria for an occupation on the skilled occupation list.
- Score at least 65 points on the eligibility test.
Skilled Regional (Residence) (Subclass 887) Visa
The Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 887) allows skilled workers to obtain permanent residency in Australia. This visa is available to individuals who have previously lived and worked in regional Australia on provisional visas, such as Subclass 487, 489, 475, 495, or related bridging visas. To qualify for Subclass 887, you must meet the following requirements:
- Hold an eligible visa.
- Have lived for at least two years in a specified region of Australia.
- Worked full-time (minimum 35 hours per week) for at least one year in a designated regional area of Australia.
