Australia Student Visa
Subclass 500 visa is a temporary visa that allows students to study for up to 5 years. The length of stay will be determined by the type of course and its length. Primary school students in grades 1–4 are typically granted a student visa for a maximum of three years.
There are various types of Streams available under the Student Visa for Australia. Every Stream is determined by the type of study you intend to pursue.
The following study types are permitted under the student (subclass 500) visa:
- Higher education (such as university or tertiary-level study)
- Primary and secondary schooling in Australia
- Secondary school exchange programs for international students
- Postgraduate research programs (including masters by research and PhD)
- Non-award programs, such as Study Abroad and Exchange semesters
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs
- Pathway courses for further academic study
- English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
- International students sponsored by the Australian Government’s Department of Defence or Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
Multiple courses, such as a language course and a vocational course, can be combined on the same visa.
This visa allows you to legally work part-time (up to 48 hours per fortnight) during the course period and full-time during the course breaks.
To continue your studies in Australia, you must apply for a new Student visa. If your student visa expires before you graduate, you may be able to obtain a Visitor visa (subclass 600). You will need a letter from your education provider stating your expected graduation date.
If you have or have previously held a student visa and have completed specific qualifications in Australia within the past six months, you could qualify for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).
You may be eligible for the Skilled Recognition Graduate visa if you are a recent engineering graduate from a recognized institution (subclass 476). If you wish to stay longer for other reasons, you must apply for a new visa that suits your circumstances. Explore your visa options.
Application Cost of Australia Student Visa
Unless exempt*, the main applicant’s visa costs start at AUD$2,000 per application.
Each family member who applies for a visa must also pay a fee.
* Citizens of Timor-Leste and the Pacific Islands who are eligible to apply for a student or student guardian visa are exempt.
You may also be charged for health checks, police certificates, and biometrics.
Use the Visa Pricing Estimator to figure out how much your visa will cost. Other costs are not considered by the estimator.
If You Include Your Family Members
You can include eligible family members (such as your partner or dependent children) when you apply for your Subclass 500 visa. However, your child must be under 18 years old at the time your visa is granted. Otherwise, they must obtain their own visa.
Even if your family members do not plan to accompany you to Australia initially, you must still declare them in your student visa application. Failing to do so will prevent them from being able to join you in Australia on a Subclass 500 Student Visa.
Your family members can also apply in ImmiAccount as a subsequent entrant (at a later time, separate from your application). Make sure to check the annual school costs for any dependent children attending either public or private schools in Australia.

Packaged Courses
For each course, you must provide us with a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE). Your main course of study is the final course you take as part of the course package. This main course determines the level of financial capacity and English language requirements you need to meet for your visa.
If your visa application includes a course package, course gaps must be less than two calendar months, unless the first course ends at the end of the standard academic year and the next course begins at the beginning of the standard academic year.
For example, the academic year typically ends in November and begins again in February the following year; three to four months is an acceptable gap between courses.
